Evangelist Louie Giglio thinks the laminin molecule looks like a cross, and that this is proof of Intelligent Design, specifically Intelligent Design on the part of one Jesus H. Christ.
(The “H” stands for Howard, as in “Our Father, who art in Heaven, Howard be thy name.)
Here’s a diagram of the laminin molecule side-by-side with a caduceus, or “Wand of Hermes.”
Personally, I think laminin looks much more like a caduceus, with its twining snakes, than a cross. This is especially significant when you realize that Hermes, messenger to the Greek gods, was the god of hidden messages.
Well, Louie Giglio has found his hidden message, although I think it’s a bit of a stretch. If you turn the model upside down, it looks like a pogo stick. If you turn it sideways, it looks like a thrusting sword. Sure, you can make a cross out of it, but crosses aren’t exactly unique in the world. Besides, it’s not exactly like this is an ironclad case of one thing causing the other. After all, fullerene is a naturally occurring molecule, and we don’t take this to mean that Jesus loves football.
We also share X-chromosomes, but I don’t hear anyone suggesting that this means we were created by Scientology’s galactic overlord Xenu.
Except maybe the Scientologists, but we don’t pay them any mind.
I think ol’ Louie is seeing what he wants to see, where he wants to see it. If we take a look at some actual laminin molecules, photographed with an electron microscope, we find that they actually look a lot like two worms “doin’ the nasty.”
Earthworms are hermaphroditic. Half of the word “hermaprhodite” comes from the god Hermes. Wow, that’s quite a coincidence. I wonder what that’s supposed to mean?
